Lyrics – Sic A Parcel Of Rogues In A Nation

Sic a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation criticises the members of the Parliament of Scotland who signed the Act of Union with England in 1707. Though the song has been attributed to Robert Burns, he made no claim to this song. Words and music were included in James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum (1792).

Fareweel to aa our Scottish fame,
Fareweel oor ancient glory;
Fareweel ev’n tae the Scottish name,
Sae fam’d in martial story.
Noo Sark rins ower the Solway sands,
And Tweed rins tae the ocean,
Tae mark whaur England’s province stands-
Sid a parcel o rogues in a nation!

Whit force or guile could not subdue,
Thro mony warlike ages,
Is wrought now by a coward few,
Fur hireling traitor’s wages.
The English steel we cuid disdain,
Secure in valour’s station;
But English gowr has been oor bane –
Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation!

O would, ere I had seen the day
That Treason thus cuid sell us,
My auld grey heid had lien in clay,
Wi Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour,
I’ll mak this declaration;
We’re bocht and sold fur English gold-
Sic a parcel of rogues in a nation!
