  1. Tears me up. My late father would sing this as any journey would start to become tiring. So many memories blending together of this being sung often late into the night in far corners of the country. We’re all from Inverness but my father served as an infantry officer in Palestine in the 1940s attached to the Gordon Highlanders. It seemed to be a very formative period in his life. I can well imagine that the words of the Northern Lights were deeply meaningful to many a Gordon Highlander patrolling the hills and orange groves of Palestine.
