I wrote down some thoughts for The National Newspaper on the tragic untimely loss of a courageous, radical and fearless woman who always spoke and sought her truth.

“Sinรฉad O’Connor was the woman who paved the way for the next generation of singers and folksingersโ€™ to speak out and advocate for causes, despite the likelihood of overwhelming public critique and consequences for their careers. We owe it to Sinรฉad to carry on her work.

Radical, fearless, articulate, political singers who stick their flag to the mast is exactly what we need more of and Iโ€™m glad to have wonderful women like Karine Polwart, Cara Dillon and Eddi Reader to look up to.”

In 2021, she became the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. Iona is a fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language, leading a successful campaign to pressure Spotify into recognising Scots and add it to its list of languages. Iona performs both folk and pop songs in the Scots language, remaining true to her rooting in tradition.
